Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Religious institutions play a pivotal role in shaping societal norms, values, and behaviors, particularly in conflict-prone settings. In the context of electoral conflict, religious leaders and organizations often act as mediators, leveraging their moral authority and community influence to promote peace and resolve disputes. Recent studies have highlighted the effectiveness of religious institutions in mitigating electoral violence by fostering dialogue, promoting reconciliation, and advocating for non-violence (Adamu & Musa, 2023; Yusuf et al., 2024). In Sokoto South Local Government, where religion holds significant sway over social and political life, religious institutions have been instrumental in addressing electoral conflicts. However, their interventions are sometimes constrained by political biases, limited resources, and societal divisions. Understanding the role of religious institutions in electoral conflict management in Sokoto South is crucial for strengthening their capacity to foster peace and stability during elections.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral conflicts pose a significant threat to democratic stability in Nigeria, often resulting in violence, displacement, and the erosion of public trust in the electoral process. While religious institutions have the potential to mediate and resolve such conflicts, their role is often underutilized or compromised by external factors (Mohammed & Abdullahi, 2024). In Sokoto South Local Government, despite the active involvement of religious leaders in promoting peace, incidents of electoral violence persist. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of their interventions and the challenges they face in conflict management. Factors such as political interference, lack of coordination among stakeholders, and deep-seated communal tensions limit the impact of religious institutions in this regard. This study aims to assess the role of religious institutions in managing electoral conflicts in Sokoto South, identifying both their contributions and the obstacles they encounter.

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive assessment of the role of religious institutions in electoral conflict management, with a focus on Sokoto South Local Government. The findings will be valuable to policymakers, electoral bodies, and religious leaders in developing strategies to mitigate electoral violence and promote peaceful elections. By highlighting the challenges faced by religious institutions, the study also offers practical recommendations for enhancing their capacity to manage conflicts. Additionally, this research contributes to the broader literature on conflict resolution and the role of religion in governance, providing a basis for future studies on similar topics.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining the role of religious institutions in electoral conflict management in Sokoto South Local Government, Sokoto State. It does not extend to other local governments or states in Nigeria.
